The animated trailer for ‘Animal Farm’ proudly declares itself “based on the masterpiece by George Orwell,” and it’s hard to argue otherwise. Orwell’s political novella is one of those rare classics that refuses to age, sharp when it was published, sharper with time. Nearly a century later, its warnings still sting, its ideas still disturb, and its relevance remains unsettlingly intact.
What’s immediately striking about Andy Serkis’ animated adaptation, however, is the tonal contrast. The ‘Animal Farm’ trailer dresses Orwell’s bleak parable in bright colors and charming character designs, with wide-eyed, talking animals that wouldn’t look out of place in a Zootopia or Sing sequel.
It’s an intentionally disarming approach, one that lulls viewers in before revealing the darker machinery beneath the surface.
As the animals overthrow their human oppressors and attempt to build a fairer society, the promise of equality slowly gets twisted, just like in the book. Power shifts, rules change, and the pigs begin to rewrite reality itself, bending language and truth to secure their dominance.

The trailer wraps these heavy ideas in a glossy, playful package, presenting the story as a brightly animated, family-friendly take on a literary classic. Amid the jokes and sparkle, we glimpse the pigs quietly conspiring with well-dressed human figures, bending and rewriting the farm’s rules to suit their growing hunger for control.
It all culminates in the chilling arrival of Orwell’s most infamous line in the closing moments: “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”
Animal Farm features an impressive voice cast including Seth Rogen, Gaten Matarazzo, Steve Buscemi, Glenn Close, Laverne Cox, Kieran Culkin, Woody Harrelson, Jim Parsons, Andy Serkis, Kathleen Turner, and Iman Vellani. The film releases in theaters on May 1.
