If you’ve been seeing the name ‘The Mighty Nein‘ pop up everywhere and are wondering what the buzz is about, welcome to the club! The animated series is based on ‘Critical Role’, the popular tabletop role-playing show where a group of professional voice actors play Dungeons & Dragons and accidentally created one of the most beloved fantasy sagas of the last decade.

For newcomers, this article is a breezy intro to the show’s core heroes, the chaotic, lovable disaster crew known as The Mighty Nein. Fun fact: “Nein” is a play on the German word for no, and despite their name, the group actually only has seven members. (Chaos from the start, clearly.) Also, while playing the game, the actors would often roll the number nine on the dice.

Below is a spoiler-light guide to the main characters of the Mighty Nein so you can meet the gang before diving into the series.

Caleb Widogast
Caleb Mighty Nein

A quiet and troubled human wizard with a haunted past and a razor-sharp mind. Caleb is thoughtful and reserved, often acting as the moral compass of the group even when he’s not sure he deserves to be. With a love for books, cats, and fire spells that might be a little too powerful, he’s the brains of the team, and definitely the most sleep-deprived. Another fun fact? Caleb’s favorite word is ‘Nein’, which is where the title ‘The Mighty Nein’ comes from.

Nott the Brave
Nott of the Mighty Nein

A small green goblin rogue with a big heart and an even bigger talent for getting into places she probably shouldn’t. Nott is clever, anxious, fearless when she needs to be, and incredibly devoted to her friends. She may be tiny, but her courage, and her ability to steal anything, make her a vital force in the group. Introduced in the pilot episode of ‘The Mighty Nein’, Nott is instantly entertaining due to her mischievous nature and strikes up an unlikely friendship with Caleb. Oh and wait, how could we forget, Nott has a serious drinking problem. At least at the beginning of the show!

Mollymauk Tealeaf
Molly from the Mighty Nein

A flamboyant tiefling blood hunter covered in tattoos and dramatic flair. Molly is equal parts trouble and charm, the kind of character who talks his way into problems and sometimes out of them. He’s a mystery wrapped in glitter, with a theatrical streak and a philosophy built around living every second like a celebration.

He is introduced in episode 3 of ‘The Mighty Nein’ as a charming soothsayer and promoter of ‘The Fletching and Moondrop Traveling Carnival of Curiosities’.

Jester Lavorre
Jester of the Mighty Nein

A bubbly blue tiefling cleric who spreads chaos and kindness in equal measure. She loves pranks, pastries, and talking to her mysterious patron, the Traveler. Jester brings sunshine wherever she goes, even when she’s summoning divine powers that can absolutely wreck enemies. Don’t let her adorable giggle fool you. Definitely one of our favorite characters of the Mighty Nein.

Beauregard “Beau” Lionett
Beau of the Mighty Nein

A tough human monk who punches first, asks questions later, and trusts absolutely no one until they’ve earned it. Sharp-tongued and fiercely independent, Beau’s skepticism makes her the perfect investigator and the team’s unofficial reality check. She’s all grit, discipline, and hidden softness.

Fjord (yes, just Fjord)
Fjord of the Mighty Nein

A half-orc warlock trying to understand where his strange powers come from and what destiny wants from him. Fjord is level-headed and strategic, with a surprisingly gentle streak beneath the tough exterior. He’s the closest this group gets to a responsible adult, and that says a lot.

Yasha Nydoorin
Yasha of the Mighty Nein

A quiet, imposing aasimar barbarian with wings and an axe large enough to split a mountain. Yasha is stoic and mysterious, carrying painful secrets behind her intimidating presence. She’s a warrior with a poetic side, more thoughtful than she appears, and loyal to the bone.

Well, that’s a wrap on the character guide and hope it gave you some basic idea of who is who. So, whether you’re an experienced Critter or totally new to the world of D&D, ‘The Mighty Nein‘ promises adventure, magic, disasters, laughter, and characters you might just fall in love with.

They’re powerful heroes, yes, but mostly they’re misfits trying to figure themselves out while accidentally saving the world. They’re messy, funny, emotional, and wonderfully human (well, mostly human). Their chaotic energy is exactly what makes them irresistible.
