If you felt slightly disoriented while watching the first two episodes of His Man Season 4, you’re definitely not alone. The odd tension, the strangely familiar dynamics, and the feeling that some contestants were acting rather than reacting all trace back to one major behind-the-scenes decision: His Man Season 4 was almost entirely re-shot.
Yes, the production team had nearly completed filming His Man Season 4 before running into serious issues with a cast member. Rather than attempting an awkward edit, the producers decided to scrap the footage and start over. The result? A brand-new shoot, but with a cast that wasn’t exactly new to each other anymore. Only two new faces were added for this overhaul.
This explains why His Man Season 4 introduces 10 “new” contestants in the first two episodes (with one more joining in Episode 3), even though eight of them already knew each other from the previous shoot. In Episode 1, viewers are essentially watching people pretend to meet for the first time, which naturally makes several interactions feel quite stiff.
In case you are wondering who the two fresh faces of His Man Season 4 are, it’s Yun-jae and Han-Gyeol, and are pictured below. Everybody else already spent a week with each other, even though they admit to not getting enough time to everybody well enough.

This Isn’t the First Time the Production Has Faced Trouble
For long-time fans, this situation might sound familiar. The same production house previously worked on ToGetHer, an all-women dating show whose first season felt noticeably awkward. That season suffered because one contestant was nearly erased from the final edit following negative reports, resulting in choppy storytelling and uncomfortable scene transitions.
With His Man Season 4, the producers seemingly chose a different (and far more drastic) approach, a full re-shoot rather than damage control in the editing room.
The emotional fallout of this decision becomes clear in Episode 2 of His Man Season 4, when it’s revealed that contestants Jae-ha and Hyeong-jun had already dated during the first shoot. In fact, the two reportedly ended the original filming as a confirmed couple.

However, when the production team announced the re-shoot of His Man Season 4, their relationship couldn’t survive the reset. While Jae-ha was determined to participate in the re-shoot, while Hyeong-jun felt there was no reason to return. After all, he had already found what he came to the show for: a boyfriend. This fundamental disagreement eventually led to their breakup.
To address the obvious discomfort between the two, the official YouTube channel for His Man Season 4 released a clip from the show titled “Jae-ha & Hyeong-jun’s Hidden Story.” In the video, both men openly explain why their interactions feel strained on-screen.
Jae-ha shares that his primary motivation for joining His Man Season 4 wasn’t just romance, but visibility. He wanted to come out to his friends and family in one decisive moment, and the show gives him that platform. Hyeong-jun, on the other hand, admits that he was deeply hurt by Jae-ha’s decision to prioritize the re-shoot over their existing relationship.
Ironically, despite his reservations, Hyeong-jun also returns for the re-shoot of His Man Season 4. While he claims to be open to finding new love, Jae-ha throws a curveball by announcing to his roommates that he intends to make Hyeong-jun fall for him all over again.
All this behind-the-scenes drama inevitably makes His Man Season 4 feel slightly scripted, or at the very least, hyper-aware of itself. Still, credit where it’s due: from Episode 2 onward, the contestants begin acknowledging their shared past, which helps ground the season emotionally.
This situation also echoes the chaos of His Man Season 3, where Son Young Joon and actor Cho Myeong Gyun had a pre-existing connection. Much like His Man Season 4, the pair initially pretended not to know each other, only to later admit they had dated before filming.
Whether viewers find this layered history fascinating or frustrating will likely depend on how honestly His Man Season 4 continues to handle these overlapping timelines. For now, though, the re-shoot drama undeniably adds a strange, meta tension, one that might end up being the season’s most compelling storyline.

The format of the show largely remains the same, the members get to call each other, go on dates, and decide who they like. But an ‘elimination’ element has been introduced, which means some might have to pack their bags and leave before they can win anybody over.
Thankfully, the two new contestants have piqued enough interest to give viewers something ‘new’ to look forward to, even if we haven’t really seen the first shoot.
