The Mighty Nein’ is rated TV-MA and is meant for viewers 17 or older

“This beacon is no religious relic. This beacon is a weapon.”

Episode one of ‘The Mighty Nein’ did a pretty solid job of setting its primary premise: a powerful beacon is stolen from the kingdom of the Kryn Dynasty, so their queen threatens to go war with Dwendalian Empire, suspecting them to be behind the daring heist. It will be up to a ragtag group of unlikely heroes to stop their world from plunging into chaos, and darkness.

Packed with multiple wild protagonists, the animated fantasy series couldn’t give viewers a glimpse of all the ‘Might Nein’ in its opening edition. So the second episode, titled ‘Who Will You Be?’, opens with a dramatic, and slightly tragic introduction of Fjord, a gentle half-orc, and the only survivor of a shipwreck.

Interestingly, Fjord gains new powers and has a shot at starting afresh, and his life takes a wildly adventurous turn when he crosses path with the mischievous, playful Jester, the daughter of a famous singer and courtesan called ‘Ruby of the Sea’. Jester is also an artist, and gets into trouble immediately when she stirs the pot and angers one of her mother’s powerful clients.

Jesters Mama in Mighty Nein

‘The Mighty Nein’ delivers a sultry, glamorous entry song for Ruby, and her character animation looks like it was inspired by Jessica Rabbit, or probably it makes one think of Jessica because Ruby has the same sort of sex appeal. Jester on the other hand has a energetic, teen vibe, and it’s cute how Jester has ‘crush on first sight’ when she runs into Fjord at a market, while being chased by armed guards.

Parallel sub-plots continue to follow Beau’s quest to investigate more about the traitors within her order, while alternatively we see the ‘traitors’ plotting their next move with the beacon. While Beau is an angst-ridden, asocial loner on a solo mission, the growing friendship between the thieving Nott and Caleb is cute, although Nott’s drinking problem is beginning to get worrying. The two new friends head to a traveling carnival called ‘The Fletching and Moondrop Traveling Carnival of Curiosities’ to steal some ingredients for Caleb’s magic. Beau also heads to the same place, expecting to meet an informant armed with a crucial tip.

In fact, most of episode 3 of ‘The Mighty Nein’ unfolds at the traveling carnival, offering a vibrantly entertaining setting for the story. The episode introduces Molly, a charismatic gender-fluid soothsayer and promoter of the traveling carnival. Molly is excited about a dangerous new act, expecting to draw a packed crowd. However, the act goes awry, sparking panic, mayhem, violence, and grisly deaths.

I think episode 3 of ‘The Mighty Nein’ is the best edition of the show so far. It’s fast-paced, focusing on multiple characters, offering both comical and darkly violent sequences. The animation vividly captures the bright, lively, colorful, magical, and entertaining atmosphere of the carnival.

The paths of almost all primary characters collide in the episode, and things ends on a very tense note. Even though the show is based on the show ‘Critical Role’, I don’t think viewers need to know anything about it to follow ‘The Mighty Nein’. So, if you’re a fan of fantasy shows with magic, mystical creatures, and an endless selection of misfits, start streaming it.
