Netflix documentary A Toxic Love Story covers a true-crime case so twisted that it’s hard to gather my thoughts afterwards. And yet, despite the sheer insanity of what unfolded, the filmmakers never quite capture the full impact of the story, especially the horrifying reality that an innocent person was jailed and could have spent the rest of their life behind bars over a completely fabricated case. For a documentary titled A Toxic Love Story, it unfolds awkwardly, when it should be hitting much harder.

The 90-minute documentary opens with the recording of a frantic 911 call, as a breathless woman reports being attacked by an unknown assailant at her home in Anaheim, Orange County. What the documentary never really addresses is why this attacker conveniently disappeared without leaving behind any clues or evidence that the assault had even taken place. Something feels immediately off from the opening minute, but you quickly set those doubts aside as more disturbing details about the case begin to emerge.
Angela Diaz, a soon-to-be mother, starts receiving vicious anonymous emails containing graphic threats of murder and rape. Married to Deputy U.S. Marshal Ian Diaz at the time, the couple soon suspects his ex-fiancée, Michelle Hadley, of stalking and terrorizing her. While the documentary reconstructs parts of this toxic love story through dramatic reenactments, it also features body-camera footage, police recordings, and fresh interviews with some people directly connected to the case.
With no concrete proof against Michelle, the couple initially serves her with a restraining order, but the threats only continue to escalate. Police finally become heavily involved after Angela claims she was attacked inside her home, and the documentary includes actual footage from officers responding to the scene. Despite the lack of physical evidence identifying a perpetrator, investigators are shown emails warning Angela that she would be assaulted by men responding to Craigslist ads.
Michelle Hadley is eventually arrested and sent to jail, but it soon becomes clear that this isn’t simply a story about a deranged ex targeting her former partner’s new wife. As investigators dig deeper, the lines between victim and perpetrator begin to blur, with both Angela and Ian Diaz gradually coming under suspicion themselves. The twists in this story are genuinely horrid, and the creators piece together a significant part of Angela’s older relationship to show her own disturbing past. Although there’s precious little on Ian, a key player in the tale.
The title A Toxic Love Story certainly suits this bizarre case, it would comfortably fit as an episode in Netflix’s Worst Ex Ever. In fact, this story features at least two deeply disturbed former partners. However, while the case itself is undeniably shocking, the documentary never fully does it justice because so many crucial pieces are left unexplored. None of the detectives who handled the investigation in its early stages are interviewed, there’s no legal expert (nor any of the lawyers involved in the case) to explain the extraordinary legal implications of what happened.
And throughout its runtime the filmmakers never even include on-screen timestamps to help viewers follow the chronology of events. It also sidesteps several genuinely puzzling aspects of the investigation, leaving some obvious questions frustratingly unanswered. That lack of context ultimately makes this remarkable true story feel less impactful than it should have been.
If there is one thing A Toxic Love Story does well, it’s giving a voice to the innocent victim who was wrongly imprisoned and is finally able to tell their side of the story, reclaim their narrative, and set the record straight. And, like many compelling true-crime documentaries, it ultimately serves as a sobering cautionary tale about manipulative relationships, dangerous partners, and the warning signs that are often only obvious in hindsight.
