So much chaos!
‘Lisa Cheese and Ghost Guitar’ by Kevin Alvir follows Lisa Cheese, a centuries-old Unicorn Girl with a cyborg arm, who gets tangled in a wild capitalist food war where a shady burger franchise takes down competitors with dirt-cheap, drug-laced burgers, eventually turning customers into obedient, food-shaped alien slaves.
The story is set in a fictional planet called ‘Earth City’, basically like the earth, but inhabited by both humans and aliens from different planets. Lisa moves there to become a folk singer, but her first gig ends disastrously, due to which she ends up with a bionic arm and anger issues. When a chain called ‘Beef is Burger’ tries to shut down her favorite food joint, Lisa gets involved in a larger battle against the evil alien corporation and a small business. But apart from fighting capitalistic aliens, Lisa balances a new internship, while trying to pursue her dreams of becoming a folk musician.
Yeah, the plot is kinda wild, but the execution was all over the place, and too messy for me. Typically, I love colorful comics, they keep me engaged like a little child, but ‘Lisa Cheese and Ghost Guitar’ just didn’t cut it. Although the artwork is pretty fun, and the alien character designs make readers feel like they are watching a video game unfold. But it’s the kind of game you might want to abandon in between.
I decided to stop reading the comic book at least twice, before finally deciding on finishing it, just to see how things end. There’s definitely a lot of creativity in the story, some readers might enjoy the burst of color and deliberate chaos, not me.
