Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Manga Look Back is now getting a live-action film, and the trailer already feels like it could be one heck of a emotional rollercoaster ride.

Look Back‘ follows Fujino and Kyomoto, two girls brought together by their shared love of drawing manga. While Fujino is confident in her artistic abilities, the quiet and reclusive Kyomoto possesses a talent that challenges everything Fujino believes about herself. What begins as a rivalry gradually blossoms into a deep friendship shaped by creativity, ambition, and the passage of time.

Directed by Hirokazu Koreeda, the filmmaker behind acclaimed dramas such as Shoplifters and Monster, the live-action adaptation appears to capture the emotional core that made Fujimoto’s story so beloved. The teaser has a warm, nostalgic quality to it, filled with calm classrooms, sketchbooks, and quiet moments between the two girls. It also offers glimpses of Fujino and Kyomoto at different stages of their lives, hinting at the thirteen-year journey that forms the heart of the story.

While the original manga became a phenomenon upon its release in 2021 and later received an award-winning animated adaptation, this marks the first live-action adaptation of a work by Tatsuki Fujimoto. Judging by the trailer, the film seems less interested in spectacle and more focused on friendship, art, growth, and the ways people leave lasting marks on one another’s lives.

Look Back is scheduled to release in Japan on September 11, 2026.
