Sasaki is having a tough time at work, so of course he continues to go to his regular supermarket just to catch cute cashier Yamada-san smile at him. Only, this time, it doesn’t necessarily cheer him up as usual, and Yamada wonders if she is losing her charm.

Episode 2 of the anime ‘Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You’ continues its entertaining, laid-back slice-of-life story about an overworked salesman named Sasaki, who befriends a playful supermarket employee called Tayama after she invites him to smoke with her. What the clueless Sasaki doesn’t realise is that Tayama and Yamada are the same person, and when he fails to uncover her identity, contrary to Tayama’s expectations, she continues pretending to be two different people.
This time around, the episode had me wondering what a live-action adaptation of the anime would look like. In animated form, Tayama and Yamada genuinely come across as two different people, thanks not only to their contrasting personalities but also to the deliberate voice acting. As Yamada, she speaks in a soft, high-pitched, almost schoolgirl-like voice, whereas as Tayama, she adopts a deeper, huskier, more playful tone while chatting with Sasaki. You can’t really blame the poor guy for not immediately figuring out they’re the same person.
Unlike Superman, who pretty much looks identical as both the caped hero and Clark Kent, or, if you’re a Bollywood fan, Shah Rukh Khan’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, where anyone could tell that the nerdy Surinder and his flamboyant alter ego Raj were the same person. A different hairstyle and tighter jeans only go so far, and SRK doesn’t even bother changing his voice for the characters.
In this episode of Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You, Sasaki unexpectedly runs into Yamada at the smoking spot while she’s in her “Yamada” persona. For him, it’s the first time he gets to have a proper conversation with his cashier crush, and he discovers that she’s just as playful and easygoing as Tayama. Naturally, he still fails to connect the dots between his new smoking buddy and the cashier he admires.
If you’re looking for something casual and low-stakes to watch during a meal break, or even a smoke break, this is an easy anime to recommend. At least for now, it’s simply the story of two lonely people sharing cigarettes, quiet conversations, and each other’s company.
