“Still the same old Dense-saki”
Tayama smirks to herself in episode 7 of ‘Smoking Behind the Supermarket’, since Sasaki still hasn’t figured out that she and Yamada are the same person. The charade continues! It does feel like even I am consistently making the same point, and maybe the uncle is only going to find out the truth in the final episode of the anime. And that’s fine. This is a leisurely paced slice-of-life comedy, with just a hint of possible romance. Sure, it’s not the ‘laugh your guts out’ kind of comedy, but it’s amusing enough so far.

Episode seven follows Sasaki as he worries about Yamada not showing up at the cash register for days. But he keeps running into her as Tayama at the smoking area, so Tayama assures him that everything is fine with his favorite supermarket employee. She also doesn’t miss the opportunity to tease him about his evident fondness for the cashier.
Sounds repetitive? Well, I guess we all do tend to make the same type of silly jokes over and over again in real life too. So I won’t complain to much about that, even though my overall enthusiasm for the show has dropped a teeny bit.
A minor subplot in this ‘Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You’ chapter involves an alleged ghost haunting the supermarket, with Tayama trying to spook Sasaki with the tale. Honestly, it’s all very silly, but it’s also clearly indicative of the wide age gap between the two. The younger woman genuinely thinks some silly ghost rumor might freak Sasaki out. It feels a bit like a high-school kid trying to scare a college student.
Amid the usual Sasaki-Yamada smoke-break interactions, the episode also serves up the usual dose of office and work pressures, which, as I’ve constantly pointed out in my last few episodic reviews, is actually quite entertaining. Sasaki having a hard time at work, getting anxious over his boss’ tantrums and struggling with the everyday salesman grind – those are the bits which give the most relatable layer of drama to this series.
