‘Yes! I am fine! This is just male menopause!’
Bwahahahahahahahaha. Sasaki telling Yamada he is just going through ‘male menopause’ when she catches him unawares in ‘Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You’ episode 10 is one of the funniest scenes in the anime.
But the primary focus of this chapter is actually a comical new character called Obata, a nervous supermarket worker in charge of fruits. Sasaki comes to Obata’s rescue after an overly friendly dog starts hassling him and that’s how they meet. Turns out, Obata knows about Sasaki’s smoke breaks, so the two men have a cigarette behind the supermarket too.
It was actually pretty fun to see Sasaki having an awkward conversation with someone other than Yamada/Tayama, and it also gives viewers a chance to see that he’s just a naturally kind, friendly, and encouraging person with everyone. Obata quickly feels at ease around Sasaki, and instantly feels grateful for his help and supporting words.
The last few minutes of the episode then shift attention to Obata’s apparent crush on his senior, Goto. At least Yamada certainly enjoys teasing him about it. For all we know, it might simply be a clumsy junior having an adorably intense admiration for an older colleague he looks up to.
By the end, it feels like you’ve just watched a filler edition of ‘Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You’, since there’s barely any development in Sasaki and Yamada’s relationship. Sasaki remains clueless about her identity, they still haven’t met anywhere outside the supermarket’s orbit, and at this rate, the whole show might just end with them remaining smoke buddies.
And that’s when I had to remind myself that the entire show is basically a laid-back filler anime, the kind of show you watch when you want to take a little break and enjoy something that doesn’t demand too much from you. Sometimes Sasaki can just rescue a scared guy from an overly friendly dog and call it a day. So yeah, this was fun.
