‘Something More Than Brothers’ takes the ‘Addicted’ formula (the controversial 2016 gay romance which got banned in China and inspired ‘The On1y One’) and throws in some K-pop elements, to give viewers a ridiculously paced, silly ‘BL’ about love, drugs, and…. that’s about it.
It’s a vertical series with several short episodes, not a pleasing visual format, but I decided to give it a go regardless because it stars the super cute Go Ho Jung, the protagonist from the fluffy mini-series ‘Choco Milk Shake’. In Korean series ‘Something More Than Brothers’, actor Go Ho Jung leaves the cute persona behind to play hunky cop Seong Han-gyeol, whose investigation into a drug trafficking case leads him to crash K-pop trainee Kim Yi-jin’s (played by actor Jo Ji-min) performance while chasing a suspect.
‘Something More Than Brothers’ is a fast-paced romance between cop Han-gyeol and K-pop trainee Yi-jin. Their first encounter is all chaos and chemistry, complete with a surprise kiss. Then, the very next day, they discover their parents are in a relationship, suddenly making things complicated and even slightly comical. As the two navigate their feelings for each other, Han-gyeol continues to look into a drug case which involves people from the K-pop industry and puts Yi-jin’s career at risk.
Jo Ji-min looks gorgeous as the sassy Yi-jin, and his long-haired K-pop idol styling makes him strongly resemble Felix from Stray Kids. He has solid chemistry with Go Ho Jung, but unfortunately the plot is all over the place, turning the show into little more than fan service for viewers craving a quick, no-brainer romance with attractive leads.
Well, the vertical format is made for viewers with short-attention spans, so expecting a well fleshed out story in blink-and-miss episodes is hoping for too much.
