Some are born superheroes, others are bitten by spiders, and then there are ‘The Adequates’, who fall into a ditch in a cemetery during a school trip… and gain a few new powers. The extent of those powers is still unclear, but issue #2 from Lee Loughridge and Marz Jr. is super fun.

This new chapter of ‘The Adequates’ opens with the main group of friends discussing a nightmare before they’re forced to play a game of dodgeball at school. And they’re up against the jocks! But before that, readers are treated to a comical match between the jocks and the goths, with the latter dramatically dressed in black instead of the orange-and-blue uniforms everyone else is wearing.
I love how the creators casually unveil the group’s powers through a simple game rather than pitting them against supernatural monsters or supervillains. Although, as far as Savannah High School is concerned, the jocks are pretty much villains already, even if they’re only second in line behind ‘the nerds’.
Most of the issue unfolds during P.E. class, where Grey, Chad, Randy, Julie, Pam, and Tweak find themselves not only surviving dodgeball against the jocks, but actually winning. One member of the group practically floats across the court, and a few classmates are starting to notice that something isn’t quite normal. Then again, humiliating the popular kids was never going to end well, was it?
The issue flies by, but the artwork is lively and engaging throughout. In a fun final twist, even though the group now suspects they may have gained supernatural abilities after their fall, they still choose to flee through a classroom window when the bullies come after them. Superpowers or not, old habits die hard. I had a great time with this issue and am looking forward to seeing what happens next.
The Adequates is also on Kindle Unlimited.
