After five seasons of chaos, murder, laser beams, and deeply traumatized superheroes, The Boys finale reaches its bloody conclusion. Some characters die horribly, some ride off into unexpectedly peaceful sunsets, and one former corporate assistant surprisingly becomes President of the United States, even if it’s for just a hot, crazy minute.
Here’s a quick look at what happens to every major character in The Boys finale.
Homelander
Kimiko uses her newly acquired blast powers to burn the V right out of Homelander’s blood, leaving the once-invincible super-freak powerless. Butcher then brutally beats the former “god” to death. Some viewers online have complained that Homelander is reduced to a crying, pathetic mess in his final moments, begging for mercy, but honestly, that is exactly who he has always been beneath the powers: an insecure coward terrified of being ordinary. And Antony Starr has sealed his place as one of the best onscreen villains to grace our screens as Homelander.
BTW Kimiko’s blast also strips Ryan and Butcher of their powers, since both are caught in the scuffle when she unleashes the attack.
Butcher
Even after finally killing Homelander, Butcher still is not satisfied and decides to release the anti-superhero virus he possesses, despite knowing it would kill his allies Starlight and Kimiko too. Hughie discovers his plan and desperately tries to stop him, but Butcher coldly tells Hughie the only way to prevent the virus from being unleashed is to kill him. A devastated Hughie ultimately shoots Butcher, immediately regretting it and trying to call for help, but Butcher chooses to die on his own terms.
Hughie
Hughie is offered a government job by the U.S. President to lead a special task force – ‘Bureau of Supe Affairs’ – to monitor Vought and remaining superheroes, but he casually turns the offer down. Instead, he settles into a peaceful new life, running his own business and continuing his happy relationship with Annie/Starlight.
Starlight / Annie
Annie plays a major role in stopping Homelander and protecting civilians during the chaos. By the finale’s end, she continues using her powers to fight crime while building a quiet future with Hughie. The two are happily expecting a child together, though they choose not to get married.
Frenchie
Frenchie does not make it to the Boys Finale and dies in Episode. But he does receive a understated farewell in the finale. Hughie reads out an odd but heartfelt letter Frenchie had written in advance for his friends in case he ever died, giving the beloved character one final bittersweet goodbye.
Kimiko
After experimentation by Frenchie earlier in the season, Kimiko inherits Soldier Boy’s powers, making her even more terrifying in combat. Following all the bloodshed, she decides to leave everything behind and begin a peaceful new life elsewhere. The finale shows her happily eating madeleines at a lovely restaurant with a dog beside her, seemingly her own pet, finally looking content for once.
Mother’s Milk (MM)
MM chooses to adopt Ryan after Homelander’s death and is later shown remarrying his ex-wife Monique in a warm ceremony surrounded by loved ones, including Ryan and his daughter Janine. Surprisingly enough, MM arguably receives one of the happiest endings in the entire show.
Ashley
Who knew Ashley would make it to The Boys finale! Ashley’s utterly absurd (and even comical) rise through the series somehow culminates in her briefly becoming President of the United States, mostly thanks to Homelander murdering everybody in his path and needing someone under his thumb. However, after the dust settles, she is impeached from office. Still, considering the number of exploding corpses in this universe, simply surviving counts as a pretty good ending for Ashley.
The Deep
Desperate to regain Homelander’s favor, The Deep attempts to kill Starlight, leading to a final confrontation between the two near the beach in The Boys finale. Annie ultimately throws him back into the sea, where he is instantly attacked and torn apart by marine creatures, a fittingly ironic fate for the aquatic superhero who spent years betraying his so-called sea friends.
Ryan
Ryan loses his powers after Kimiko’s blast removes the V from his body. Rejecting both Homelander and Butcher’s toxic influence, he decides to start over entirely and becomes part of MM’s family instead, finally getting a chance at a somewhat normal childhood. The Boys finale also kills any hopes of a future spin-off where Ryan could’ve emerged as Homelander’s successor in the superhero world.
