Set in America, ‘The Last House’ follows Ann and Jason, a married couple, as they get ready to step out with their kids, Ruth and Graham, for some Christmas shopping. To their horror, they realize they cannot get out. All the doors are bolted, the windows are tightly shut, and any attempt to break through them, or even the walls, proves futile. When Graham tries to break a window, cracks appear on the surface, but they automatically seal themselves again, kinda like how Wolverine would heal himself.
The film quickly establishes that everybody in the neighbourhood is facing the same problem. Nobody can get out, and for those who were outside when the weird phenomenon started, well, they cannot get back in.
At first, everybody thinks it’s the government’s doing, after which the theories keep flying, aliens being the top contender. That’s because little Ruth often sees creepy supernatural creatures lurking outside the house pretty early on. And these creatures are more active when it rains.
One of the neighbours who is left outside tells the family not to let the creatures see them, or they’ll be dead. So every time it rains, they cover up all the windows and hide. Ruth, however, is extremely fascinated by the creatures and thinks not all of them are cruel, human-hunting monsters.
Days turn into weeks, months, and years, and the family somehow manages to keep themselves alive by growing their own food and catching whatever animals they can through a clever mechanism developed by Jason. It’s essentially a trap set through the chimney to lure in small animals and birds and reel them in as food.
Ann and Jason establish a strict routine and rationing system so they can maintain some sense of normalcy, while pretty much everybody else in the neighbourhood dies of starvation. Hence the title – the last house.
The Ending of The Last House Explained
After years of being trapped in their own house, Ann and her family figure out that the creatures keeping them locked in are some sort of sea creatures with supernatural powers. At one point, the creatures enter their home in search of survivors and leave when they find nobody, as the family manages to hide well. But the encounter also reveals something important: the creatures can open the doors to the family’s freedom.
Ruth postulates that they must be ancient beings residing in the sea who have finally chosen to come onto land and reclaim their world. Her parents don’t necessarily agree with the theories, but it’s a solid one.
Some viewers might recall that ‘The Last House’ opens with a quote by Arthur C. Clarke: “How inappropriate to call this planet Earth, when it is quite clearly Ocean.”
This also explains why humans start getting trapped in their homes during a strong spell of unseasonal rain, which continues for a long time.
So, we have to assume that these creatures are indeed some sort of supernatural sea beings that want humans to perish inside their own homes. It seems to be a metaphor for how water pollution and human activity are killing marine life, except now, the sea creatures are essentially returning the favour.
Anyway, Jason and Ann come up with a plan to lure one of the sea creatures into their house, hoping to force it to open a way for them to escape.
Their plan works. They trap the sea creature inside their home and even manage to injure it, with Jason threatening to kill it unless it lets them leave. Then, in a rather contrived emotional moment, he remembers how little Ruth told him that not all of the creatures are bad. So Jason sets the creature free. Acknowledging his mercy, the creature opens the door and allows the family to escape.
Unfortunately for the family, as soon as they step outside, several other creatures surround them. But the one they saved seems to vouch for them, and they’re ultimately left alone. And obviously, the ultimate message of ‘The Last House’ is: kindness pays. Or that we must be more considerate of other species, lest they evolve and decide to kill us all.
So in the end the family sets out into the ocean, looking for more survivors and, hopefully, their next home. Realistically, they should be murdered pretty soon by the creatures. But of course, the Last House ends on a more hopeful note.
