‘Black Ghost’ by Alex Segura, Monica Gallagher, and George Kambadais isn’t a black-and-white comic book series, but when I call the finale ‘colorless’ in the headline, it’s reflective of how underwhelming and drab it turned out to be. Did the creators just give up by the finale on putting any real effort into it? Because look at the cover art, even that’s quite dull and un-inspiring for a finale.
As predicted in Black Ghost Issues #3 and #4 Review, the creators do insert a deus ex machina twist to save protagonist Lara Domingue from what could’ve been certain death. Issue 4 had ended with Lara donning on her vigilante suit and blindly following her extremely untrustworthy friend Kelly into a trap: she walks right into a crime boss’ den, without any back up or arms, and find herself helplessly tied to chair in the last scene.
The final chapter opens with a flashback that follows Lara on her way to meet her brother. These scenes also shed light on the identity of the original Black Ghost, the hero who died before Lara stepped in to take up the mantle. In the present timeline, it initially looks like game over for the washed-up reporter. However, an unexpected rescue allows Lara to continue investigating the growing ties between Creighton City’s drug mafia and a wide range of powerful players, including members of the police force.
It’s a fast-moving issue in which the creators do their best to tie up loose ends and bring the story to a close, with Lara stepping into the role of Creighton’s new Black Ghost. That also leaves a target on her back, as the identity of the city’s new masked vigilante is barely a secret. And to no big surprise, Lara does get get job back at the Creighton Courier.
I was expecting a lot more from the finale and found it quite underwhelming. As a result, I wouldn’t recommend this comic-book series and don’t plan on reading Season 2. Anyway, if you’re in the mood for a chaotic, low-stakes comic-book series about a hard-drinking reporter trying to tackle crime in her town (and mostly failing), go ahead and give it a try.
Black Ghost is also available on Kindle Unlimited.
