‘Dangerously Sweet’ is a silly vertical drama about office worker Shirase Yuu (Keitatsu Izumi) getting hammered and having a one night stand with the handsome Kuroda Kou (Gennosuke), a wealthy heir. While Yuu runs away as fast as he can the next morning, Kou starts to dig deeper into the guy who essentially popped his cherry. And thus begins a comedic romance between the cold, rich businessman, set to inherit a massive empire, and the very cute Yuu.
Spanning 50 episodes of 2 minutes each, ‘Dangerously Sweet’ brims with cliches found in the Japanese BL genre, and it surprisingly starts off with a steamy kiss, but in a trope-heavy set-up: a drunk Yuu he walks into the wrong hotel room, and starts to make-out with the guest, because he is gorgeous. At least viewers don’t have to wait until the last episode for the primary couple to lock lips.
The rest of ‘Dangerously Sweet’ follows Kuroda Kou getting his assistant to investigate Yuu’s background, while he slowly starts to fall for the officer worker. Despite making the first move, Yuu goes into panic mode and claims he is straight, but also, he can’t help but melt in front of Kou, because the dude is just that hot. At least that bit feels realistic in this otherwise nutty and un-serious show. Plus, lead actors Keitatsu Izumi and Gennosuke are adorable together.
To complicate their romance, ‘Dangerously Sweet’ throws in a ridiculously corny villain duo: Kou’s jealous sister and brother-in-law, as they want to inherit the company. When the couple finds out Kou is pursuing a guy, they start targeting poor Yuu in an attempt to get Kou framed in a gay scandal and ruin his reputation among shareholders.
The series is slightly reminiscent of the Korean romance “Roommates of Poongduck 304”, which also revolved around a wealthy heir falling for an ordinary employee. Kou, however, isn’t the typical handsome playboy. He dislikes being touched and struggles with physical proximity, a character trait that’s only briefly explored and adds very little to the story.
In the end, the adorable central couple is the show’s biggest strength. If charming chemistry is all you need from a romance, then ‘Dangerously Sweet’ is a decent one-time watch. Sometimes, after a long ugly day, a little eye candy is exactly what the doctor ordered.
