New Yorker Danny Landau is still stuck in Medieval Britain and is participating in a completely rigged competition against King Arthur’s knights and knaves to prove himself in ‘Medieval’ Issue 4 by Neil Kleid.

Chapter 4 opens with an entertaining flashback to how Danny’s girlfriend Gina woke up hundreds of years in the past. At least Danny woke up in a relatively deserted field with one stray night in sight, poor Gina finds herself in the midst of a raging war and a scene so shocking that the completely freaks out.

But as soon as readers are taken back to the present in ‘Medieval’, things aren’t as interesting. It’s the same shit: Danny beating the hell out of everybody around him, pools of blood splashing the pages, and lots of cussing. Which was kinda hilarious earlier, but plain repetitive now.

Panel from Medieval

So this time-travel action comedy has been getting progressively boring despite its wild plot about an aggressive plumber (Danny) from the Bronx wreaking havoc with his baseball bat in medieval times. The focus of issue #4 continues to be on Danny facing challenges thrown at him by King Arthur.

The artwork in the comic-book is still good, but the story is not as thrilling anymore. Sure, King Arthur’s mage is up to no good and is trying to find out more about Danny and Gina through shady means. But c’mon, the sub-plot about an evil wizard trying to take over the world is so outdated. And there is the usual suspense over whether Gina wants to go back to the future with her plumber boyfriend or live a royal life with the King.

Again, Gina’s choices aren’t going to be interesting, because if she chooses to go with Danny, it’s going to be a mushy expected turn of events, but if she opts to stay by the legendary King’s side as his favorite girl, nobody is going to blame her! She has already managed to bring basic electricity in medieval Britain, so if she continues to tinker with the past… who knows… she might become more of a legend than Arthur himself. Although, of course, Gina is NOT the primary protagonist of this story.

At this point of the series, I am not sure if I want to continue reading ‘Medieval’ anymore, but the story does end in a funnily unexpected twist.

Rating: 2 on 5. ‘Medieval’ is also on Kindle Unlimited.
