After nearly getting everybody killed at the haunted shopping mall, Victor is temporarily banned from the “Spectral Science Club,” which means no more haunted adventures for him, and his best friends, Miri and Reeves. So, issue #4 of “Raise Hell!” by Jordan Alsaqa follows the friends as they face regular teenage problems, like awkward crushes and allergic reactions.

Even though this comic book series features colors, the issue opens with black-and-white panels, which imagine Miri in a manga romance. It turns out, Miri is an Otaku who creates her own fan fiction and has a new crush. Allistair the demon gets Miri to confess who she is infatuated with and then leads the friends into helping Miri score some brownie points with the guy she likes. As always, Allistair’s schemes lead to problems and fights among the friends. While Victor tries to test the waters for Miri by talking to her crush, Reeves spectacularly fails at being a supportive friend due to her cynical attitude.

This issue of “Raise Hell!” was rather plain, and somehow the artwork in the comic is beginning to get less engaging for me. Usually, it’s the other way around—the more I read a new comic book series, the more the art grows on me (unless I simply do not like it at all from the start, but read it for the story). It’s because Raise Hell’s plot wasn’t very funny or interesting this time around, so the rather simplistic art stood out more, but not in a favorable light. Regardless, the issue was kinda cute, and even though it doesn’t feature a lot of magic or supernatural disasters, it did have its funny moments.

Rating: 3 on 5. The comics are also on Kindle Unlimited.
