Ah, another episode that ends with Sasaki and Tayama not exchanging numbers, even after having a decently long phone conversation over Goto’s phone.
This chapter was all about the last few days of the year, and it got me wishing it was December for real, because Sasaki finally has a few days off from his crazy-hectic job and he even gets to visit his family for a bit. Basically, ‘Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You’ Episode 11 has a very “relax, it’s the end of the year” atmosphere.
Poor Yamada/Tayama falls sick, and as a convenience store worker, she feels guilty about taking time off because, unlike the rest of the world, she’s expected to work more than usual during the year-end deals and rush. Goto recruits Sasaki to help convince the junior that she should just rest and recover.
The highlight of this episode is the moment Sasaki calls Yamada/Tayama from Goto’s phone and she goes into genuine panic mode, nervously wondering who exactly he’s calling for. Is he calling because he hasn’t seen his favorite cashier, Yamada, in a while, or is he calling for his smoking buddy Tayama? And of course, this is something that matters to her, because even though Tayama is just a fake name she made up for Sasaki, she’s actually her authentic self during their smoke breaks, while Yamada, the ever-smiling cashier, is more of an act she puts on for customers.
It’s both kinda hilarious and disappointing that the two still haven’t exchanged numbers. I mean, Sasaki even has a smartphone now. So what the hell?! But well, Goto has a blast overhearing their conversation and is rooting for their romance, just like the rest of us. There’s no real world progress there, though.
Overall, this episode of ‘Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You’ is fun and well-paced, and it was fun to see both Sasaki and Tayama in new outfits. The last few minutes have them sharing a smoke as usual, while Tayama pulls Sasaki’s leg, mocking his lack of fashion sense, and hopes they’ll continue smoking together in the new year.
