Book number 45 for the year - 'Neighbors' by Elizabeth LaBan & Melissa DePino. This sweet little non-fiction story celebrates the friendship between two women. Quite often, our women friends are our strongest pillars and we don't often get to see that in fiction books. Since it's non-fiction, there is no heightened drama, no jarring twists. Just a simple story about two grown women being each other's anchors when the weather gets stormy, preventing the other from drowning.

Always nice to spot your book on a friend's shelf. Get a copy of 'LOVE, LOSS, LOCKDOWN' for a contemporary collection of short-stories following the lives of 10 very different individuals. The ebook is also available on the #kindleunlimited subscription.

Book number 44 for the year - Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami. On the sides is a new book mark I drew/made, featuring Carmilla from Castlevania, the animated show. Back to the book, there's a lot to say about it, so a longer review is on my website - AbstractAF.in (link in bio too) Let's just say, at the heart of it - Norwegian Wood is a love story, peppered with songs, sex, strolls and some sake.

Book number 43 for the year - 'The Magic Fish' by Trung Le Nyugen, a beautiful graphic novel about a young boy Tien who loves reading fairy tales with his mom. The art is absolutely stunning in this book, giving a certain surrealism to the panels. Love how the author Nyugen blends themes of both sexual & immigrant identity in the story. For those looking for reading something for 'Asian Heritage Month', pick this one. It had been on my wishlist for a while, @arcana_reads gifted it to me ❤️

Book number 42 for the year - The Thirty-Nine Steps by John Buchan. What a muddle of a mystery novel. Well, that's what you get when you buy a hardback just because it was cheap. It's a chaotic/pompous story about Richard Hannay, who gets mixed up in a murder case of a spy who was aware of a dastardly plot to assassinate a leading figure and trigger a World War. Hannay for most part of the novel is on the run from authorities and his adventures fluctuate between interesting & mind-numbingly boring. Buchan's narration is slightly dry, so despite being a short novel, it takes a while to finish. You would probably be better off with a good old Agatha Christie.

Done reading book number 41 for the year - "Welcome to the New World" by Jake Halpern & Michael Sloan. It's a non-fiction graphic novel that tracks the story of an immigrant Syrian family in America. The family in this novel is one of the luckier ones - they manage to escape unscathed. Somehow it felt like their experiences were sugar-coated, or maybe I was expecting something more than the pretty straightforward story that's served in this book. For those who haven't followed the Syrian crisis closely, "Welcome to the New World" is a good pick to understand the lives of migrants and the hardships they have to deal with when they move to a new nation, be it racism, bigotry or a loss of their sense of self.
