Universal Pictures dropped the official trailer for Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ and the first look is already screaming ‘epic’.

“After years of war, no one could stand between my men and home. Not even me.”

Just under two minutes long, the trailer opens on a bleak, war-torn landscape, a desert full of remains of once brave soldiers. It’s been a long war, and the journey back home isn’t going to be any shorter. The opening scene is gloomy, desolate, and instantly cinematic.

Based on Homer’s saga, director Christopher Nolan (Inception, Oppenheimer, Interstellar) sets ‘The Odyssey’ right after the Trojan War and follows Odysseus (played by Matt Damon), the legendary Greek king, as he embarks on a perilous voyage back to Ithaca, a journey that famously takes far longer than anyone expects.

True to Nolan’s style, the Odyssey trailer is strikingly thin on dialogue. Instead, it relies on mood, scale, and imagery. Vast oceans stretch endlessly, storms loom large, and there’s a constant sense of foreboding, as if the world itself is conspiring against Odysseus and his men.

Anne and Tom Holland in The Odyssey

We only get fleeting glimpses of the film’s star-studded ensemble. Faces appear briefly, then disappear just as quickly. The cast includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya and Charlize Theron. Some of them make blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearances in the trailer, others don’t even make it.

The mythical elements are treated the same way. Rather than fully revealing the legendary monsters Odysseus encounters, Nolan opts for shadows, silhouettes, and ominous hints, a massive shape beneath the water, an unsettling presence in the dark. It’s enough to spark curiosity without robbing the film of its mystery.

The film opens in theaters worldwide on July 17, 2026, and for now, Nolan’s restrained, atmospheric first look has already set sail in the right direction.
