Youtube probably has the best algorithm out there. It knows what to show viewers based on their watch history and doesn’t just push famous people content, unlike a few notorious platforms that promote bizarre things you have no interest in. That’s how I came across ‘The Dating Game’, a short film starring Hudson Williams, probably since I saw his Laufey music video & of course a few ‘Heated Rivalry’ fan edits.

But ‘The Dating Game’ is not really about Hudson Williams. Written and directed by Alex Vance, the indie comedy follows Dana (Alison Chang), whose best friend Amy (Christina Marie Adams) is determined to get her to date. To make that happen, Amy lines up three men in the living room and has them introduce themselves as if they were contestants on a reality show. Williams is one of the three hopefuls vying for Dana’s attention.

Unsurprisingly, all three men are weirdos, with Hudson Williams playing the wackiest of the bunch. That said, Ryan Jamison, who plays an awkward, geeky contestant named Arthur, gives Williams’ nutty character some serious competition.

Of course, Dana finds the entire situation absurd and shows zero interest in the men. Amy, however, enthusiastically plays moderator, encouraging the contestants to reveal more about themselves and win Dana over. In under five minutes, the dating game reaches a decisive conclusion.

There isn’t much to unpack here. This is a fun little short that pokes fun at dating shows and the unnecessary pressure single women often face to date, especially as they get older. Dana is perfectly happy watching dating shows at home in her pajamas, and it takes an entire circus for Amy to realize that dragging three strange men into her friend’s living room isn’t going to solve her non-existent problems.

It’s the kind of short you can watch during a quick snack break.
