Episode 7 of “The New Look” begins with a rainy day in Lausanne, Switzerland, where Coco Chanel (Juliette Binoche) is scheming to destroy her business partners – the Wertheimers. However, she needs to get to Paris for her plot, a move that could result in her imprisonment for being a Nazi collaborator. Meanwhile, Christian Dior (Ben Mendelsohn) faces twin challenges: delicately informing Lucien Lelong (John Malkovich) of his decision to leave his long-standing position and resisting his investor Boussac’s (Patrick Albenque) attempts to thwart his vision for the ideal location of his new fashion house.

Titled “It All Came True”, this edition largely focuses on both Chanel and Dior’s dreams to start afresh. It also follows Catherine Dior’s (Maisie Williams) slow road to recovery as a Nazi prison camp survivor. Coco once again leverages the frivolous charms and connections of Elsa Lombardi (Zabou Breitman) to her benefit.

“It’s like a crypt. It’s like a mausoleum. My vision will die there. I will die there,” Christian vehemently protests in private to his lover about the building Boussac wants for the “House of Dior,” but he isn’t able to summon the same heated passion when faced with his business partner Boussac. Fortunately for him, an unlikely ally emerges to support Dior in establishing the fashion label he envisions, rather than succumbing to the dictates of his investor.

In the review for episode 6 of “The New Look”, I expressed mild disappointment over the fact that fashion doesn’t take center-stage in the series, despite World War II coming to an end in the story-line. However, I’ve since re-calibrated my expectations regarding the series, realizing this historical drama primarily focuses on its protagonists’ attempts to start anew in their lives after surviving the trials of a horrifying war, rather than emphasizing on the rise of French couture or that of Dior. Of course, this offers viewers an interesting slice of history, especially for those who don’t know much about the lives of the famous Coco Chanel and Christian Dior, whose legacy in the fashion industry still endures.
