Before he became the world’s most famous detective, a young Sherlock Holmes was just another sharp, restless Oxford undergrad, and Guy Ritchie is taking us back to those formative years with an upcoming Prime Video series centered on a young Sherlock. Given the character’s enduring popularity, this origin story promises to peel back the layers before the legend fully formed.
Played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin, who previously worked with Ritchie on The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, this ‘Young Sherlock’ is all raw intelligence and unsettled ambition. The teaser doesn’t give much away plot-wise, but it clearly positions Sherlock as a brilliant mind still figuring out who he wants to be, and what kind of future lies ahead.

Much of the ‘Young Sherlock’ teaser leans into tone rather than story. We see Sherlock arriving at Oxford, observing the world with curiosity and impatience, clearly not yet the polished detective audiences know.
One of the standout moments is a light, self-aware gag at a shop, where Sherlock considers buying a cap that closely resembles his iconic deerstalker. Before he can commit, a friend shuts the idea down with a brutally honest warning: “If you start wearing a hat like that, I will no longer be friends with you.”
That friend, it turns out, is played by Dónal Finn, and he is none other than Moriarty. Whether this moment is simply playful fan service or the earliest spark of their legendary rivalry remains to be seen, but it’s a clever tease that hints at how these two paths may begin to diverge.

From explosions, shoot-outs, and even a comical scene of the young Sherlock getting arrested, the teaser-trailer promises to deliver an entertaining origin story.
The supporting cast includes Zine Tseng, Joseph Fiennes, Natascha McElhone, Max Irons, and Colin Firth, rounding out a period ensemble that places Sherlock firmly in 1870s Oxford. According to Prime Video’s official description, the series will chart Sherlock’s first brush with murder, a globe-trotting conspiracy, and the case that changes his life forever, long before Baker Street enters the picture.
For now, the teaser keeps its cards close to its chest. It offers flashes of character, humor, and attitude, presenting Sherlock Holmes not as a finished icon, but as a young man still assembling the pieces of the persona that would one day make him legendary.
Young Sherlock comes on Prime on March 4, 2026. Watch the trailer below.
