Netflix’s ‘Desi Bling’ is a reality show about wealthy Indian expats living it up in Dubai. It’s a little like ‘Super Rich in Korea’ but with much more gossip, fights, and drama. If you’re 25 or below: please do not learn anything from this silly show, we’d trust older audience with knowing this is possibly 100% scripted, despite the ‘reality TV’ tag.

The show tries to deliver some sort of story-telling by making it about a celebrity Indian couple moving to Dubai and socializing with flashy rich folks, including a billionaire who loves getting leg massages from his wife every morning and a caviar-eating dog. Some of these guys are so rich, that one of them solemnly claims ‘My dad came to Dubai with just 30,000 dollars’. Makes one think of that viral Victoria Beckham clip where David Beckham hilariously calls her out for claiming she is very ‘working class’. LOL.

“We didn’t go to Bollywood, we bring Bollywood to us.”

The first episode of ‘Desi Bling’ starts with television actor Karan Kundrra flying to Dubai with girlfriend Tejasswi Prakash on a private jet. The show essentially revolves around the celebrity couple, who started dating on Bigg Boss, trying to build a glamorous new life in Dubai alongside their wealthy new social circle.

Karan and Tejaswi’s first stop in Dubai is self-proclaimed billionaire Satish Sanpal’s flat in Burj Khalifa, where wife Tabinda’s most interesting contribution to the conversation is saying, “I have 40 kgs of gold.” The rest of Desi Bling follows Karan partying with his friends, while Tejaswi makes new girlfriends, including fashionista sisters Alizey and Lailly Mirza, who admit to looking eerily alike because they have the same plastic surgeon (you have got to appreciate the confident honesty), and rich housewife Iryna Kinakh.

Almost everybody’s personality in Desi Bling is limited to wearing flashy clothes, some of which might genuinely hurt your eyes, and getting Indian actors to attend their parties. So, not very surprisingly, the seven episodes are laden with random cameos of actors, and other popular celebrities, which range from chef Ranveer Brar to actors like Shilpa Shetty, Tiger Shroff.

One participant who constantly attracts attention on the show is Pamala Serena, a former beauty queen and socialite who loves stirring up trouble wherever she goes. Karan hilariously compares her entry into the show to that of a glamorous vamp, humming the Komolika soundtrack, while the producers comically add a bit of the trademark villain music in the background. But unfortunately, Pamala is just a annoying, petty brat, who can’t get over the fact that someone tried getting her ex-boyfriend’s number at a party. Who cares? Get over it.

And that is basically the whole vibe of Desi Bling: endlessly wealthy people screaming at each other over the dumbest imaginable nonsense. Half the time, you start wondering whether these people are simply so bored by their luxurious lives that manufactured drama is the only thing keeping them stimulated, or if the producers just completely ran out of better ideas to make the cast fight.

Anyway, if that sounds like the brainless show you’d want to laugh over with some pop-corn, invite your friends and watch this regressive rich people drama.

Desi Bling is on Netflix.
